I believe that the way how technology is so prominent in today's society is the main influence for teachers and students use of it in the classroom. Children love technology. Even the youngest children already know how to work their way around using a phone or iPad. Technology use in the classroom helps to increase student engagement because they enjoy using it. That may also be the reason why teachers tend to use it because they know that their students will be engaged.
According to itse.org, the ISTE standards are a "framework to rethink education and create innovative learning environments". It helps educators to think about how we teach and learn. As a student, I think that I fall under the category of a Digital Citizen because I am always on my phone or laptop. I am always using some form of technology in my everyday life and it feels like its a necessity to me. One category that I feel I am not most comfortable under is the Innovative Designer. I am not really the type of person to think of new things to create, although I wish I was because inventing things is cool and can get you far. I can be very creative at times, but not as much as someone who would fall under this category to actually produce something new that has not been seen before. I hope to learn to be more creative though and not stick to simple things that I am used to.
I agree with the label of "digital native" for today's youth because it's just the norm. The term "digital native" means that you are accustomed to technology and the way it works from a young age because you are born/growing up in the era of technology advancement. It's easier for the youth to use and understand how to use it than adults. There has been many cases where I have witnessed the difference between me (digital native) and my teachers (digital immigrant). For instance, certain features of programs that the teachers may need assistance with from students because they do not know how to work it or can't figure it out. Even with my mother sometimes, my sister and I have to demonstrate to her how to use certain features on her iPhone that she can't figure out how to use. In the future, I know there will probably be some differences between what I can do with technology vs my students. Because technology is constantly changing, the newer generation will become the "digital natives" and I will become the "digital immigrant", where it would be easier for them to understand the newer forms of technology.
